FMUK - Has Buying Social Just Evolved?
HAS BUYING SOCIAL JUST EVOLVED?
There is no doubt that Social Enterprises are becoming more common place in the UK economy, and with over 130,000 social enterprises now operating in the UK employing over 2 million people*, the rising trend is expected to continue.
One such recently formed Social Enterprise is Communia FM. Communia FM, is a small independent FM consultancy, set to serve the FM market in 2025.

WHAT MAKES A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE?
Social enterprises are like any other trading business, however, the key differences that define a Social Enterprise are;
· They have a clear social mission which is set out in its governing documents.
· They re-invest or donate at least half of its profits towards their social mission.
It is this fundamental aspect of having a social purpose that prompted Communia FM’s founder, Antony Ferdinand, to create a business model that supports people who are like his son, Harry.
COMMUNIA FM - THE BACK STORY
In March 2022, Antony welcomed his son, Harry, into the world. Soon after being born, Harry received a diagnosis of Down Syndrome. Antony told FM UK;
“I’d aways been a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion advocate before Harry arrived, but upon Harry’s diagnosis the way I viewed DEI transformed. Like any parent, one day I want Harry to have a career and to have work colleagues that he connects with. I want him to have the things that you and I may take for granted, but to do those things he will need to be given opportunities by people who are responsible for recruiting. It was then I decided to create Communia FM, whose social mission will be to invest time and money into supporting charities that help people living with disabilities to secure employment.”
WHAT NEXT FOR COMMUNIA FM?
As a small, independent consultancy, Antony was keen to stress that the aspirations of the business are not to rival more established FM consultancies already in existence. Antony told us;
“As a parent and carer of a child that has Down Syndrome, the aspirations of the business are primarily to invest time and money into helping charities. I very much see Communia FM as an organisation that can supplement and enhance more established FM consultancies, as by using Communia FM, they will be boosting their own social impact.”
Working with charities such as the Down Syndrome Association and Positive About Down Syndrome (PADS), Antony intends to deliver a social impact report to demonstrate the value that Communia FM is adding.
